Waterloo Region – The Immigration Partnership is partnering with the United Nations Migration Agency (International Organization for Migration - IOM) to host the first ever Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF) in Waterloo Region. Launched by the IOM in 2016 to celebrate the 18 December annual observance of International Migrants Day, the GMFF features new films that capture the promise and challenges of migration for those who leave their homes in search of a better life and the unique contributions migrants make to their new communities.

Many residents of Waterloo Region have their own stories of migration. According to the 2016 census, 22.6% of Waterloo Region residents are immigrants, or 119,335 people. Many other residents have migrated to other parts of the world.

Ten films will be screened in Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo from 5-18 December:

  • 5 Dec, 6p.m., Princess Twin Cinemas, Waterloo, Problemski Hotel
  • 6 Dec, 7p.m., Albert McCormick Community Centre (Community Room), Waterloo, No Problem! Six Months with the Barefoot Grandmamas
  • 9 Dec, 7p.m., Cambridge Centre for the Arts (Toyota Room), The Cambridge Hotel
  • 11 Dec, 6:30p.m., Downtown Community Centre, Kitchener, Home in a Foreign Land
  • 12 Dec, 6:30p.m., Kingsdale Community Centre, Kitchener, The Deportation of Innocence
  • 13 Dec, 6:15p.m., Queen’s Square Library, Cambridge, Nanny
  • 14 Dec, 6:30p.m., Victoria Hills Community Centre, Kitchener, The Lucky Specials
