If you are new in Waterloo Region, your child may need an assessment before starting elementary or secondary school.

Students in elementary school (junior kindergarten to grade 8) must be registered at the school they will attend. The school will help you with language and math assessments, if needed.

Students in secondary school (grades 9 to 12) who are new to Ontario or in an Ontario school for less than six months must have an assessment before starting school. There is no fee to register for an assessment. Book your appointment as soon as possible so your child's admission is not delayed. You should bring the following to the assessment with you:

  • Passport
  • Proof of immigration status
  • Proof of immunization
  • Proof of address (rental agreement, house deed or utility bill)
  • Telephone number
  • Most recent school documents (if possible)

Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) secondary students should call the guidance office at the school they will attend.

Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) secondary students should contact the WRDSB Welcome Centre for Newcomers.
