Settlement services & immigration resources

Moving to a new country is exciting, but there is a lot to do and learn. Many local organizations offer free support to help newcomers settle into your new community in Canada. Whether you need help with learning English or French, finding a job or housing, registering for school, or making community connections, these organizations are here to support you every step of the way.

What settlement services can help with

Settlement workers are often your first point of contact. They can help you identify your needs and connect you with appropriate local services, including housing, health care, schools, and transportation; understanding your rights and responsibilities in Canada; accessing interpretation and translation services; finding employment and career support; English or French language learning; community programs and volunteering opportunities; completing forms and applications; and building local connections.

Our community partners across Waterloo Region provide free settlement support to immigrants, refugees, and other newcomers. Services may be available by phone, email, in person, or by appointment. Interpretation is often available upon request.

These organizations serve refugee claimants and government assisted refugees specifically.

Immigration legal services

Immigration legal advice and representation in Canada should always be provided by licensed or regulated professionals, such as immigration lawyers or registered consultants.

Before choosing a provider, make sure to:

  • Verify that they are licensed or regulated in Canada
  • Confirm fees and services in advance
  • Be cautious of unlicensed advice or unrealistic promises
  • Ask questions if anything is unclear

You can verify licensed professionals through:

If you are unsure, community organizations can help guide you to trusted resources.

Important notice: Waterloo Region Immigration Partnership does not provide immigration legal services or representation directly. We connect newcomers to trusted information and community resources.
