Housing

Finding a place to call home

Finding a home is one of the first steps when you move to a new community. In Waterloo Region, you can find different types of housing, from apartments and townhouses to single-family homes. Local organizations can help you find safe and affordable housing, understand leases, apply for housing programs, or find a place that fits your needs and budget.

Most newcomers start by renting. Rental listings can be found on local websites, community boards, housing boards at colleges and universities such as University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College, as well as through real estate or rental agencies.

Settlement organizations can provide guidance and support, as well as:

Affordable or subsidized housing

Some housing offers lower rent for people with low or moderate income. You can apply for subsidized or community housing through the Community Housing Access Centre (CHAC)

Emergency or temporary housing

If you need a place to stay right away, emergency and temporary housing is available. Shelters and housing services can support individuals and families in crisis or transition.

Tenant rights and responsibilities

If you are renting in Ontario, both tenants and landlords have rights and responsibilities to ensure housing is safe and fair.

Tenants have the right to live in a safe home, receive proper notice for rent changes or eviction, request repairs, and be treated fairly without discrimination. Tenants are also responsible for paying rent on time and taking care of the property.

If you need help or have a dispute with your landlord, support is available through the Landlord and Tenant Board or local community legal clinics. Learn more about your rights as a tenant on the Government of Ontario website.
