Settlement & immigration resources

Moving to a new country is exciting, and there is a lot to do and learn. Newcomers typically access two different types of support:

  • Settlement services help you adapt and integrate into your new community after you arrive (for example, information and orientation, community connections, and employment counseling).
  • Immigration services help you with the legal process of entering and residing in Canada (for example, visas, work permits, and permanent residency).

Settlement services

Several local organizations offer free support to help you settle into your new community. Whether you need help with learning English or French, finding a job or housing, registering for school, or making community connections, these organizations are here to support you every step of the way.  Make a settlement worker your first point of contact after you arrive. They can help you to identify your needs and connect you with appropriate local services, including housing, health care, schools, and transportation; understand your rights and responsibilities in Canada; access interpretation and translation services; find employment and career support; find where to learn English or French; access community programs and volunteering opportunities; complete forms and applications and build local connections.
